Against The Light is the title of my M.A show. It included some 50 cardboard cut out "male" figures. The chosen shapes were taken from many different sources, classical art, contemporary fashion magazines ,pornographic publications etc All the poses represents various forms or elements /depictions of the masculine and masculinity. The concept being to shine a light on the manufactured way in which we create or design images/reflections of man, (HUMAN IDENTITY AS ARTIFACT). Another part of the installation is the 13minute video piece (titled; Contre Lumiere) which breaks down into 4 performances. I pose and distort the body to suggest/point at the stereotypes and signifiers that have become automatically entrenched in our minds. I poke fun, in every respect, at their two dimentionality and how viewers might read the male body. |
