ARTIST STATEMENT 2007

I recently finished an M.A in Virtual realities at The National College of Art and Design, Dublin, 2007.

Over the past two years - and more - I have been collecting, filing and nurturing a number of ideas and concepts, challenging my own artistic assumptions, boundaries and beliefs.

My work is about Identity and Self, the subconscious and bodily ego, the inside and outside. I question what is true or real, normal and abnormal.

The materials and techniques I use vary from project to project, often being selected because of their aesthetic and sensual qualities. One thing that stays constant is the use of the body. I position myself and the body at the centre of the work.
I see the body as material. It is both a means of communication and questioning, it is direct. My performance to camera is a questioning of excepted social codes and culture.

I use masks because I believe them to posses a transformative quality which offers a way in to another realm.

Research is central to my art-making as I try to make sense of the world and my place in it by examining concepts of masculinities as promoted by contemporary mass media and throughout art history.
